Oysters & Clam Chowder - Popular Christmas Dishes!

Tuckers Shuckers research discovered something that we were thrilled to find out and excited to share - Oysters and Clam Chowder are very popular dishes to serve on Christmas Eve!  Not only do we have the freshest oysters at the Lake of the Ozarks right here, but we also serve up an incredible, house-made clam chowder that simply can't be beat.

It looks like the tradition of having these seafood treats on Christmas Eve began with Irish immigrants in America in the mid-1800's.  Traditionally, Irish-Catholics would avoid meat the day before their huge, Christmas feast.  The dish of choice was a stew made from the ling fish.  Once it America, ling was difficult to find, but oysters were plentiful.  Thus, oyster stew became the new tradition.

We aren't quite sure when Americans began eating clam chowder more often than oyster stew, but there are many families today that list that delicious dish as the food that they expect on the table Christmas Eve. That, along with fried oysters seemed to pop up a lot during our research.

Tuckers Shuckers serves up our savory, house-made clam chowder and a wide variety of fresh oysters every day.  Our Lake of the Ozarks oyster restaurant features the following choices for you on our oyster menu:

  • Oysters on the Half Shell - Mid Atlantic and our Oyster of the Week
  • Oyster Shooter
  • Chargrilled Oysters
  • BBQ Oysters
  • Oysters Rockefeller
  • Southern Fried Oysters
  • Chargrilled Sriracha Oysters

If you are looking for a new tradition to start this Christmas, head on over to the best oyster restaurant on the Bagnell Dam Strip and add clam chowder and oysters to your seasonal list.  Our amazing seafood is sure to make you want to repeat this new tradition year after year.

Celebrate National Seafood Month at Tuckers Shuckers!

The month of October is designated as National Seafood Month.  This is something that the best oyster restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks loves to hear!  One look at our menu clues you in to the fact that we love seafood.  Here are a few reasons that you should be a seafood lover too!

It's good for you.

Studies have been done that prove a diet rich in healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish, lowers the risk of heart disease and might also help prevent Alzheimer's.  It aids in building cell membranes in the brain, helps control blood clotting, and even aids the body in preventing heart attacks and strokes.  Eating seafood twice a week is the suggested amount to get all of these nutrients that you need.

It's versatile.

You can have it fried, baked, grilled, blackened, in soups, with pasta...  The possibilities are endless.  Tuckers Shuckers even features an Oyster Shooter to drink!  Absolut Peppar vodka, spicy Bloody Mary mix & sauce 5 surrounding one of our delicious oysters is quite the tasty treat.  You will find a wide variety of seafood choices on all of our menus:  starters, soups & salads, sandwiches, and entrees.

It's delicious.

Everything we produce out of our kitchen is delicious, but we take special care in making sure that our seafood is the freshest and best flavored food on the Bagnell Dam Strip.  Here are just a few of the numerous choices that will tempt your taste buds and keep your tummy happy.

5 Facts About Oysters You May Not Know

We are all about our oysters at Tuckers Shuckers.  We pride ourselves on having the freshest oysters at the Lake of the Ozarks.  We already know that oysters taste amazing, but here are 5 more interesting things about them that you may not know.

1. Every oyster has the ability to be male or female.
While they can only be one or the other at any given time, oysters have the ability to change their sexes.  They have gonads that make eggs as well as sperm!  At least once during their lifetime, an oyster will change from male to female, and vice-versa.

2. They are very fertile.
A female oyster can release over a million eggs in a spawning season.

3. Oysters breath like fish.
Oysters have both gills and mantle to breathe through.  They also have a small, 3-chambered heart that pumps colorless blood.

4. Oysters "are what they eat."
The color of an oyster is decided by its diet.  The meat is generally light beige, light gray, or off-white.  Their diet usually consists of plankton, animal waste, and decayed plants, along with any small particles that they suck in.

5. You should only eat oysters in months with an "R"...
...IS NO LONGER TRUE!!  The reason for this was because a long time ago, when refrigeration methods were not good like they are today, it was difficult to keep oysters in the Summer months.

Tuckers Shuckers has 2 "R"s in it's name, so oysters must be twice as good here!  Seriously though, we really do our very best to make sure that each and every item out of our kitchen is at the highest possible quality.  The delicious food items on our menu are sure to satisfy even the toughest critic.  Give us a try, and make sure that while you are here, you try the best oysters on the Bagnell Dam Strip.
