25 Super Bowl Fun Facts

Super Bowl 50 is taking place this Sunday, February 7, and the best place to watch the game at the Lake of the Ozarks is Tuckers Shuckers on the Bagnell Dam Strip.  We'll be featuring our Pitcher & Pound special during the game for $9.99, and don't forget all about that 50" Smart HDTV that we're giving away at halftime!




In case you're bored with all of the pre-game junk that they will be showing before kickoff, we've dug up a few interesting Super Bowl facts for you to discuss with the other football fans that are sitting around waiting for the game to start.  

1. In the first Super Bowl on January 15, 1967, the Green Bay Packers defeated Kansas city at the Los Angeles Coliseum 35-10.  

2. The winners of that first game earned $15,000 each, while the losing team took home $7,500.

3. In 2015, the winning Patriots took home $97,000 each, and the Seahawks players each earned $49,000. 

4. The trophy that the winning team takes home was originally called the World Professional Trophy.  In 1970, it was renamed the Vince Lombardi Trophy after the legendary Packers coach.  

5. Tiffany & Co. manufacture the trophy every year.  It is made of sterling silver, is 22 inches tall, and weighs 7 pounds.  The football on top is regulation size. 

6. The name "Super Bowl" was suggested by Kansas City Chiefs founder Lamar Hung during a planning meeting in 1966.  His children were obsessed with the popular Super Ball toy, and that's what made him think of Super Bowl.  

7. Until the late '70s, striped balls were allowed for special games and night games.  Super Bowl VIII was the only time that a ball with stripes was used for the Super Bowl.      

8. Super Bowl XII was the first night game for the title.  Before that it was always an afternoon game. 

9. Every year 72 footballs are used for the Super Bowl.  Over 700,000 footballs are purchased by the NFL over an entire season.  

10. Before 1974, the goal posts were positioned at the front of the end zone.  That season they were relocated to the back of the end zone.

11.  The San Francisco 49ers are the only team to have played in more than one Super Bowl and have no losses.  They have earned a total of five Super Bowl rings.  

12. The Chicago Bears were nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Song by a Group in 1985.  The "Super Bowl Shuffle" made its way all the way to #41 on the Billboard charts.

13. 1987 was the year that Giants quarterback Phil Simmons is credited as being the first to deliver the now famous line, "I'm going to Disney World!"

14. Super Bowl Sunday is the second largest day for eating.  Thanksgiving is #1. 

15. Approximately 1.25 billion chicken wings are consumed on Super Bowl Sunday.

16. Chicken wings started gaining popularity as a football food after Buffalo made it to the Super Bowl 4 years in a row.  

17. The highest priced ticket to Super Bowl I in 1967 was $12.  In 2015, the most expensive ticket was $17,800.

18. The first game program sold for $1, and in 2015 they cost $20.

19. A 30-second commercial spot during the Super Bowl in 1967 cost $37,500.  Ads during last year's game were $4.5 million. 

20. The youngest winning head coach for a Super Bowl team is Steelers Mike Tomlin at age 36 in 2009.  The oldest is the Giants Tom Coughlin at age 65 in 2012.  

21. The biggest age difference between two quarterbacks in history is this year for Super Bowl 50.  Peyton Manning (39) and Cam Newton (26) were born 13 years and 48 days apart.

22. Brett Favre and Peyton Manning are tied with 199 career wins.  If the Broncos win this year, Manning will take the all-time record. 

23. Peyton Manning is the only quarterback to go to the Super Bowl with more than one team.  He has played twice with the Colts, and this year will make twice with the Broncos.  

24. The Panthers are 1 of 13 teams that have never won a Super Bowl.  This year will mark their second shot at it.  

25. The Super Bowl cannot end in a tie, but so far no Super Bowl has ever gone into overtime.
